Civil Rights And Gender And Sexual Orientation - 849 Words

First and foremost, I do no believe there is a comparison between civil rights and gender/sexual orientation (gay individuals). To compare the two in any shape or form is to diminish, underestimate, depreciate and compromise the severity of the crimes committed against black people at the hands of their white slave masters. Civil rights were not just about granting freedom to black people, but it was about restoring the general dignity of humans regardless of their race. The humiliation black people suffer was catastrophic, it threatens the existence blacks in America. A whole generation of black people was stripped of their human dignity, ripped apart and mutilates like cursed animals. To disenfranchise an entire generation in such a way just because of the color of their skin meant that an entire generation of people was at the verge of extinction. Additionally, it is an insult to all African-Americans and black people in general to compare civil rights to gender/sexual orientation (gay individuals). Black, who had no control over the color of their skin, were murdered, denied food and water, denied to use restroom/restaurants/hotels/, separated from all form of activities that dignify humans, kept in camps with deplorable conditions, used as guinea pigs for medication trials, raped, tortured, lynch, among others, sees this as an attempt to downplay the importance of civil rights and black history in America. A Range Of Artists And Their Works - 2006 Words

â€Å"Artists who innovate and challenge existing conventions have an effect on the artworld as profound as an earthquake- they change the shape as of the art landscape†. Evaluate this statement with reference to a range of artists and their works. An earthquake is a ground shaking movement initiated by a sudden movement of rock in the Earth’s crust. These movements occur along faults, which are thin zones of crushed rock dividing blocks of crust. They are caused by stress that builds up over time as blocks of crust attempt to move but are held in place by friction along a fault. When the pressure to move becomes stronger than the friction holding them together, adjoining blocks of crust can abruptly slip, rupturing the fault. Sometimes the end is closer than you could ever imagine. I never knew that it was my last day; nobody did. If they knew, maybe they would have treated me differently, but they can’t change that now. I’m dead. It was a normal Tuesday in November. The leaves were yellowing and falling off the trees. I admired the scenery as I walked to the bus stop, but then I coughed. The dark smoke from a cigarette filled my lungs. I looked up as the crusty, old man who lived up the street walked towards me, cigarette in hand. He looked me dead in the eye, inhaled the smoke of his cigarette, and exhaled it into my face. â€Å"Get a move on!† he yelled as I ran. Once the bus pulled up, I hopped on. I despised the bus. Since it was the day of the prom, we only had school until after lunch. After that, we could go home and get ready for Prom. English, math, and science went as they normally did. Boring material with even more boring teachers. I hated school. I did not, however, hate learning. I liked being taught new things; I adored reading and writing. I just loathed the teachers. I disliked the way they treated students and their attitude towards learning. All they wanted to do is get paid and go home. I wished for a teacher that actually wanted to show up in school. Was that really too much to ask? After four long hours of class, it was finally lunch time. After that, we could go home! I loved lunch because it the only time I could talk to Marcus. We had no classes together and barely saw each other in the hallway. I walked into the already crowded cafeteria and looked around. Then I saw him at a table. Wow, he was perfect. Everything about him was from his blonde hair to the freckles scattered across his face. He turned in my direction and motioned for me to come and sit. I proudly walked over and took my seat next to the most popular guy in the junior class. I wished he was my boyfriend. He told Lauren that we were going to Prom as friends, but he could have asked any girl to go as a date. I hoped he really liked me. I turned to him to

From Pizza Parties to Medical School free essay sample

I never would’ve thought that a pizza party could have had such a huge impact on my life. Back in 5th grade, our school announced a fundraiser where each classroom would get a jar. The goal was to fill it up with loose change and maybe a couple dollar bills here and there. At the end of the fundraiser, they would total up the money and reward the classes which collected the most. The prize for third place was a dress-down day and for second was a pizza party. But the class in first place got the ultimate reward. A dress-down day AND a pizza party. I went to a school with uniforms. Our cafeteria food wasn’t gourmet. To the students, dress-down days and pizza parties were considered holy. Not really thinking about anything but my desire to win, I decided to take two fifty-dollar bills from my secret stash and I nonchalantly tossed them into the jar. We will write a custom essay sample on From Pizza Parties to Medical School or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page After a couple weeks and re-fills of the jar, the results were to be announced. Third Place was 7A and second place went to 6B. Finally the big announcement came. The entire school went silent. Kids in my class were holding hands and crossing their fingers. The winner was 5A! My classroom erupted in cheers, laughter, and jumps-for-joy. A couple weeks later, my parents called me up to my room. They calmly asked me to get out the money I received for my First Communion. Trying to play it cool, I claimed some one must have stolen it. After exchanging looks, my parents informed me that my teacher had somehow discovered I put the money in the fundraiser jar. She revealed this to them at another school function. They told me that they weren’t angry, but I would have to do something to remedy the event. My dad had the perfect idea in mind. The day after Christmas, he told to me dress warmly and because we were going into the city. A couple hours later, we arrived at St. John’s Hospice in north Philadelphia. My father explained to me that we were going to be working in the kitchen for couple hours. We were going to hand out meals to the 300-400 homeless men that come in each day. As the lunch began, all I could think about was how I wanted to get this over with so I could play with my brand new toys. But as the mealtime went on, I realized something. These men were overjoyed at the food they were receiving. I couldn’t believe it. A roll, some chicken, some mashed potatoes, and a piece of pie. I considered it a fairly simple and commonplace winter meal. The men’s faces lit up with each portion of food they were given. I realized how bad some people in this world today actually have it. I had always heard about giving to the needy, but I never fully comprehended that statement until that day. It was enlightening to see how thankful they were over something I though was cheap. I attained an idea of how much I had taken for granted in my short lifetime. I learned that I didn’t really need all the materialistic things I initially desired. Afterwards, on the drive home, I thought about the earlier events and how happy those men were. My dad suggested McDonald’s for lunch and I abruptly answered no. I knew that I didn’t need it. That day was where I came to know how good it felt to help people who really need it. I know it may sound corny, but it’s one of the greatest feelings one can feel. I now return to St John’s Hospice every year. I know how it great it feels to be a part of something trying to make a difference, and I want to make sure I do the same in my career. This is why I am becoming a doctor. I like to think that in my future I will be making a difference in people’s lives just like I did on that one December 26th.

Human needs paper Essay Example For Students

Human needs paper Essay 1. The needs of public assistance helps single parents or families just starting out with low income; Theses help qualify them for public housing and assistance. They usually receive the basic things that any person with a full time job would receive such as, medical cards, health insurance, dental insurance, and eye care. 2. I really dont pay taxes, so I really shouldnt have any opinions about this issue, but I do. I dont really mind the public assisted people especially the ones who are single parents and need the money because their isnt any income or child support being brought in to feed children in the house. I dont agree with the people who do nothing at all and just milk the system. Id like to go kick my feet up on their T.V. and say why dont you make your self useful and get me a beer out of the fridge and while your up get me a cigarette, cause odds are, the working people of America are paying for it, anyways. 3.The pros and cons of family life involves the emotion, development and public assistance part of the authors views. Sometimes families, when poor steer to solidarity, willingness to share. This solidarity gives them a strong sense of priority for their families. This also helps the kids of these type of families to make better for their kids. There are joint parental responsibilities that are shared between the mother and father. Their responsibility is to, financially manage, companionship with children, discipline of children, and other family responsibilities. IN public assistance services, this type of way of family life doesnt work. This is caused because of their amount of money, that they have coming in and it is hard for these type of people to agree on financial decisions, let alone take care of their childrens together. In these type of public assistance houses parents do not prepare their children for lives hardships, due to the fact that they only usually care about the mselves. The house being ran by a woman has its pros and cons. A good thing is a womens ambition and her efforts to make sure that her children have the best. Im not trying to be stereotyping but most of them in public assistance housing, use their kids tobenefit from the government funding and their kids usually see none of it. This is a great example in my opinion on how it should work but does nothing but causes the kids to do the same as their parent. The worst of all the family lives and I see this in everyday life around where I live (not meaning my parents) is the parents both or single parents dont want any responsibilities. Neither parent wants the family. In this household there is laxity and each one nags to each other to gain responsibility. This is the worst household out of all of them for a child to grow up in. These are the types of families thatpresent a problem for public assistance. The parents bring no strengths and are usually likely to relegate to the agency as many of their parental responsibilities as willing worker interested in the welfare of the children will take over. 4. Some of these people may not be able to read or write. They also might not be able to understand the questions or not be able to completely fill out the application. To gain correct and accurate information about the individual applying; they must over see it so that they know that everything is running smoothly, with the tax payers mon ey. .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 , .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .postImageUrl , .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 , .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:hover , .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:visited , .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:active { border:0!important; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:active , .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5 .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud7b9040c0846596290d40e7cd77e20e5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Deforestation Essay5. Street Car Named Desire By Williams Essays (924 words) -

Street Car Named Desire By Williams Our lives are consumed by the past. The past of what we once did, what we once accomplished, and what we once could call our own. As we look back on these past memories we seldom realize the impact these events have on our present lives. The loss of a past love mars are future relationships, the loss of our family influences the choices we make today, and the loss of our dignity can confuse the life we live in the present. These losses or deaths require healing from which you need to recover. The effects of not healing can cause devastation as apparent in the movie A Streetcar Named Desire. The theme of A Streetcar Named Desire is death. We encounter this idea first with the death of Blanche and Stella's relationship as sisters. Blanche and Stella had a life together once in Bel Reve and when Stella decided to move on in her life and leave, Blanche never could forgive her. This apparent in the scene when Blanche first arrives in New Orleans and meets Stella at the bowling alley. Stella and Blanche sit down for a drink and we immediately see Blanche's animosity towards Stella. Blanche blames Stella for abandoning her at Bel Reve, leaving Blanche to handle the division of the estate after their parents die. As result of Stella's lack of support, we see Blanche become dependent on alcohol and lose her mental state. Blanche comes to be a a terrible reck through out the movie as we learn of the details of her life at Bel Reve. Her loss of the entire estate and her struggle to get through an affair with a seventeen year old student. This baggage that Blanche carries on her shoulders nips at Stella through out eventually causing the demise of her relationship. As Blanche's visit goes on with Stella, the nips become too great and with the help of Stanley, Stella has Blanche committed to a mental hospital, thus symbolizing the death of the realtionship they once had. The next death we encounter in the film is the death of Stella and Stanley's marriage. Our first view of Stanley is of an eccentric man, but decent husband who cares deeply for his wife. However, as as Blanche's visit wears on, we come to see the true Stanley, violent and abusive. Stanley is a true man of the fifties, he is sexist and depedent on his wife's submissive attitude in order to acheive what he wants accomplished. This attitude is first apparent when Stanley and his buddies have their first poker game while Blanche visits. Blanche occupies her time in the other room decorating the walls and decides to turn on the radio. At first Stanley is slightly annoyed by the music and tells Stella to turn it down. Then as his rage builds after she doesn't turn off the radio, Stanley rips the radio down from the wall and throws it. We view Stanley as a beast who waits to erupt at any second. Stella is not typical of the normal woman of the fifties. She will not take the abuse to a point and when Stanley hits her, she reconsiders her options. We again view Stanley's rage as he yells, "Stella! Stella!". Stella's strength proves to be weak when she returns to Stanley arms later, however their relationship was still in trouble. Stella finally endures enough when she learns of Stanley's abuse of Blanche and leaves Stanley in the final scene of the movie; the death of their marriage. The last main example of death in A Streetcar Named Desire is the death of Blanche and Mitch's relationship. Death is the factor that drew the two together, the death of Blanche's life at Bel Reve and Stanley's dying mother. Their realtionship prospered for a while as Blanche and Mitch connected, finding a common ground they could relate two. In the scene at the boatdocks, we view the impact of the death of Blanche's husband on her current relationship with Mitch. Mitch wants Blanche to the point of marriage and Blanche's obsession with the past hinders Mitch's plans. This common ground proved to weak when Mitch learned of Blanche's life at Bel Reve and her premiscious lifestyle. When Blanche sits by the phone waiting for Mitch's call, we view the impact of death on Blanche's life. Blanche's past relationships which caused so much pain where now resurfacing in Mitch. Mitch love Blanche dearly, but could not overcome this

To Kill a Mockingbird Quotes

To Kill a Mockingbird Quotes To Kill a Mockingbird is narrated by Jenna Louise ‛Scout’ Finch as n adult woman recalling her childhood so thoroughly the adult voice vanishes. One result of this layered narration is that the six-year old Scout seems very precocious both in her understanding of life and her vocabulary, both of which are subtly elevated for a child of her age. This technique allows Lee to explores her dark themes with both the light innocence of childhood and the complexity of adulthood, resulting in a timeless story that remains a beloved American classic. Quotes From To Kill a Mockingbird Quotes about Racism â€Å"Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I dont pretend to understand.† [Chapter 9] While Atticus Finch is deservedly one of the most beloved characters in American literature for his wisdom, compassion, and courage, he’s not perfect. One of his noble imperfections is a sometimes blind faith in justice and fairness, and a bafflement at the racist and unfair attitudes of those around him. Here he expresses an honest befuddlement that other people forget their principles of empathy and fairness whenever a black person is involved. â€Å"I think theres just one kind of folks. Folks.† [Chapter 23] This simple line, spoken by Jem at the end of the novel, may be the simplest expression of the fundamental theme of the story. Jem and Scout’s adventures throughout the story have shown them many sides of many different people, and Jem’s conclusion is a powerful one: All people have flaws and struggles, strengths and weaknesses. Jem’s conclusion is not the starry-eyed faith of childhood, but a more measured and mature realization that no one group of people is better- or worse- in general than any other. Quotes about Growing Up â€Å"Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.† [Chapter 2] Part of Scout’s journey in the story is the slow broadening of her awareness. Just six years old when the story begins, she has a very narrow view of the world and her role in it. But by bit her experiences over the years change her. She sees how gender and race, class and economics affect the way people treat you. She sees that her universe is not eternal and guaranteed, and thus begins to appreciate the aspects of her life that she took for granted- like reading. â€Å"Scout, I think Im beginning to understand something. I think Im beginning to understand why Boo Radleys stayed shut up in the house all this time... its because he wants to stay inside.† [Chapter 23] Jem’s quote towards the end of the story is heartbreaking. In his teen years by this point, Jem has seen the bad parts of his neighbors and is disappointed and disturbed by the realization that there is so much violence, hatred, and prejudice in the world. His expression of empathy for Boo Radley is also significant- like his sister, Jem has progressed from viewing Boo as a phantom and an object of fun to seeing him as a human being, and, even more importantly, being able to imagine Boo’s motivations for his actions and behavior. â€Å"Bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn theyre not attracting attention with it.† [Chapter 9] Atticus is often perceived by his neighbors as an unqualified parent, in part because of his gender- in 1930s American society men were not seen as having the proper emotional and domestic skills to be single parents- and in part because of his bookish, mild-mannered nature. He is, however, a very smart and loving father and a man who has an almost supernatural understanding of the childish psyche. When Scout begins using profanities as a novelty, his reaction is mild and unconcerned because he understands this is just part of Scout growing up, testing boundaries, and play-acting with adult things. This also demonstrates his understanding that Scout is intelligent and verbal, and is excited by forbidden and mysterious vocabularies. Quotes about Justice â€Å"There are just some kind of men who- whore so busy worrying about the next world theyve never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.† [Chapter 5] Lee crafts a subtly iconoclastic and liberal tone in the novel. Here Miss Maudie is complaining specifically about the local Baptists who disapprove of her garden because it supposedly represents pridefulness that offends god, but it is also a general admonishment to anyone who seeks to impose their own sense of propriety on other people. This concept forms a part of Scout’s evolving understanding of the difference between what’s morally right and what society insists is correct. â€Å"Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.† [Chapter 9] In the beginning of the novel, Scout’s concept of justice and right and wrong is very and simple (as is appropriate for a girl of her age). She believes it is easy to know what is right, she is always willing to fight for it, and she believes that by fighting she will be victorious. Her experiences with racism, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley teach her that not only is right and wrong often more difficult to parse, but sometimes you fight for what you believe in even if you are bound to lose- just as Atticus fights for Tom even though he is doomed to fail. â€Å"The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box. As you grow older, youll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and dont you forget it- whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.† [Chapter 23] Atticus has immense faith in the fundamental systems of America, in particular the court system. Here he states two beliefs that define him: One, the supreme confidence that the legal system is impartial and fair; two, that all men are deserving of the same fair treatment and respect and those who would treat you differently because of your race or social position are unworthy. Atticus is forced to admit the former is not as true as he would like when Tom is convicted despite the robust defense Atticus provides, but his faith in the latter remains by the end of the book. Quotes about Innocence â€Å"Mockingbirds dont do one thing but make music for us to enjoy... but sing their hearts out for us. Thats why its a sin to kill a mockingbird.† [Chapter 10] The central symbol of the novel is the Mockingbird, which is held as sacred because it does no harm- it only provides music, making it a sin to kill one. Several characters are obliquely or explicitly identified with Mockingbirds throughout the novel- The Finches are linked through their evocative last name, for example, and Scout thinks that doing any harm to Boo Radley would be like shooting a Mockingbird when she finally see him for the innocent, childlike soul he is.

Ghost Light from Dead Galaxies Sheds Light on Ancient Galaxy Interactions

Ghost Light from Dead Galaxies Sheds Light on Ancient Galaxy Interactions Did you know that astronomers can learn about galaxies that died long ago? Thats part of the story of the cosmos that the  deep cosmos-gazing  Hubble Space Telescope  was built to tell. Along with other telescopes on the ground and on orbit, it fills in the story of the universe as it peers out at distant objects. Some of its most fascinating objects are galaxies, including some that formed in the infancy of the universe and are now long gone from the cosmic scene. What stories do they tell?   What Hubble Found Studying long-dead galaxies sounds like it would be impossible. In a way, it is. Theyre no longer around, but it turns out, some of their stars are. To learn more about early galaxies that no longer exist, Hubble observed dim  light from orphaned stars that lie some 4 billion light-years away from us. They were born billions of years ago and somehow were ejected at high speed from their original galaxies, which themselves are long gone. It turns out some kind of galactic mayhem sent these stars reeling across space. They belonged to a galaxies in a massive galaxy called Pandoras Cluster. The light from those far-flung stars provided clues to a crime scene of truly galactic proportions: as many as six galaxies were somehow torn to pieces within the cluster. How could this happen? Gravity Explains a Lot Each galaxy has a gravitational pull. Its the combined gravity of all the stars, clouds of gas and dust, black holes, and dark matter that exist in the galaxy.  In a cluster, you get the combined gravitational pull of all the galaxies, and that affects all of the members of the cluster. That gravity is pretty strong. In addition, galaxies tend to move around within their clusters, which affects the motions and interacts of their cluster-mates. Add those two effects together and you set the scene  for the destruction of some not-so-lucky small galaxies that happen to get caught in the action.  They get stuck in a squeeze play between their larger neighbors as they travel, Eventually, the strong gravity of the bigger galaxies pulls the smaller ones apart.   Astronomers found clues to this destructive shredding of galaxies by studying the light from stars scattered by the action. That light would be detectable long after the galaxies were destroyed. However, this predicted intracluster glow of stars is very faint and is quite a challenge to observe. These are extremely faint stars and they are brightest in infrared wavelengths of light. This is where Hubble comes in. It has very sensitive detectors to capture that faint glow from the stars. Its observations helped scientists study the combined light of about 200 billion stars that were cast out from interacting galaxies. Its measurements showed that the scattered stars are rich in heavier elements like oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen. This means they are not the first-ever stars formed. The first stars consisted mainly of hydrogen and helium, and forged heavier elements in their cores. When those earliest ones died, all the elements were cast into space and into nebulae of gas and dust. Later generations of stars formed from those clouds and show higher concentrations of heavy elements. It is the enriched stars that Hubble studied in an effort to track what happened to their galactic homes.   Future Studies Zero in on More Orphan Stars Theres still a lot to figure out about the earliest, most distant galaxies and their interactions. Everywhere Hubble looks, it finds more and more distant galaxies. The farther out it  peers, the further back in time it looks. Each time it makes a deep field observation, this telescope shows astronomers fascinating things about the earliest times in the cosmos. Thats all part of the study of cosmology, the origin and evolution of the universe.

Catholicism in Medieval Europe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Catholicism in Medieval Europe - Essay Example Before starting to discuss the topic of the essay, it should be beneficial to point out the main statements, met in literature as for the possible impact, which religion may create on the economic development of any country. When considering the Bible as a complex social and ethical teachings, it is necessary to account, that it does not contain any 'definite system of theoretical and practical knowledge',1 but only the essential features of faith and morality are described; the Bible gives only the basis for behavioral patterns of human business life. The influence of Catholicism on the dynamics of the market system development can not be unilaterally evaluated. The development of capitalism in Italy, Spain, Portugal and the related countries, has happened much later in comparison with the other countries of Western Europe. The explanation to this phenomenon researchers find in the long-lasting Muslim influence in Spain and Portugal.2 Catholicism was noted as the religion, which was able to quickly react to the changing reality, but we are here to consider the possibility of Catholicism as religion influencing the economic development of the Western European countries before 1570, and though the thesis of close connection between religion and economic development is now subjected to fair criticism, it can't be denied that during the period of pre-Industrialism Catholicism as religion has created considerable effect on the way people were living and working, creating the general product and defining the direction of economic development of their countries.3 As far as the data about the economic development of pre-Industrial Europe is scarce, it would be better to base the evaluation of the economic state at that time and the impact of religious allegiance on that state through the notions of urban population growth and looking closer at the situation with real wages by 1570. Real wages may become the very factor, which will lead us to the conclusion, but exact numbers are absent and we may only take into consideration the aspects of growth or decrease in these wages in comparison to other non-catholic countries of Europe.4 The growth of urban population also presupposes the higher economic prosperity of the certain European countries. It should be noted here, that the northern parts of Europe, which were characterized by the development of Protestantism, were by that time not very well economically developed, due to the scanty population and lacking economic ties between the countries of that region; this has little to do with the impa ct of religion, but it should be noted, that the notions of Catholicism have ultimately defined the way Southern European countries were going in their economic development. It is also necessary to say, that historically the period of European development before 1570 was closely connected with social tension and economic underachievement - facing the consequences of the plague epidemic and crisis of the agrarian production.5 The workers who had traditionally been involved into agriculture, had to leave their places and arrive to cities, where they were hardly been able to find a place of constant employment. The cities by that time were well-developed as the separate units of each state, and had enough amount of autonomy, thus

Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 24

Ethics - Essay Example However, the exact grounds that justify connection between the mind and the body along with the energy associated by which the mental impact upon such physical entity, lies beyond the prevailing reach of human knowledge. Despite this such problem with causation that has hardly found resolution in his philosophy, Hume recognizes that the ultimate basis of all value is desire and emotion while the presence of rational judgment is only assumes the role of determining what makes a person satisfy basic desires toward happiness. On the contrary, the ethics proposed by Kant perceives good will as the sole absolute good wherein moral act does not constitute the will to gratify self-interests and that one’s act can only be considered to possess moral worth if it is done out of duty. Kant further supposes that purity of thoughts are a basis of moral obligation which is generally attached to a universal principle every human deed ought to abide by in order to be labeled moral in nature. Through his metaphysical critique of pure reason, nevertheless, Kant admits that the highest sensibility to knowledge is yet unreachable for even as mind is susceptible to dynamism, its capacity for operating within conf ines of reason and morality is limited by the empirical realm of space and time. While Plato, on the other hand, metaphysically holds the theory of ‘dualism’ in consideration of reality on different levels being composed of ‘forms’ and ‘physical world’ where the latter contains images that are less real than physical objects, he establishes an amply similar argument with Kant’s ethical position. Based on virtue, Plato presents ‘well-being’ as the ultimate end of human’s rational thinking and conduct with which applied virtues form the character traits and pertinent skills that complete an individual. Being a student of Plato, Aristotle

Violent Femmes - Add it up :: Music

Violent Femmes - Add it up The disc player drones on as I recline peacefully on the pure white sands of my very own desert island. I am the only human being on this island. Ah, peace at last, but as the days turn into weeks and the weeks to months and the months to years I wonder; why have I not gone completely insane? Sentenced indefinitely to solitary confinement on my paradise prison. Yes, it has been a struggle to maintain my sanity, but I have one very special companion; the Violent Femmes album Add it up. Every time I listen to this album I am reminded of the last time I ever saw all my friends together; before we all went our separate ways in life. Park Rules for Your Safety: No Smoking No Radios or Music No Open-air Fires Do not take Shortcuts Watch for Bears Oh, what do we care of rules and regulations anyway. We were, after all, rebellious teenagers. We carefully stowed away radio, and cigarettes, and tightly tied our hiking boots. The four of us waved casually to the ranger as we began our ascent of the mountain. When we were out of earshot we stopped and emptied the smuggled goods from our backpacks. Unloading the radio we popped in Add it up from the Violent Femmes and continued on our journey. Not only did we play the music loud and probably scare every living organism in the forest stiff, but we also sang at the top of our lungs. People we passed on the trail smiled from ear to ear and some even laughed at our antics, but we didn’t care. Then we came to a shortcut along the trail. Should we take it? Of course, we were rebels. Against the advice of the experts, we got off the beaten track and made our own path through the forest. We were careful to keep out of sight when entering and exiting our newly blazed trail, not becaus e we feared getting caught, but because we wanted out own sovereign experience: to be shared with and had by no one else. Finally reaching the top was the greatest feat we could have ever accomplished. Being at the top of the mountain was like standing on top of the World. Looking down over the surrounding farmland and towns one could really appreciate the wonder that is Nature. The World below so tiny one could pick it up and make it snow by shaking it, just like one of those snow globes. Racial Prejudice in The Movie Jungle Fever - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 867 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2019/02/05 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Racism Essay Did you like this example? The movie Jungle Fever directed and writen by Spike Lee, brings the viewer the lives of two families African Americans and descendants of Italian immigrants. One of the historical parts of the movie which is presented by the filmmaker is the side of the city which the families of Bensonhurst, a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn, reacts when one of them- Angie( an italian descendant) starts being romantically involved with Flipper ( African American). Vinny, a character in the movie that is shown as resistant to this interracial relationship, is a friend of Paulie, Angie’s italian boyfriend, which owns a store in the neighboorhood and is frequented by mostly italians. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Racial Prejudice in The Movie Jungle Fever" essay for you Create order Vinny’s reaction of resistant, bigotry and despair in relation to the involvement of an Italian american woman and african american men is lead by the desire to keep the italian background of the community he was raised, to fight for his roots and the desire to maintain the neighborhood where he was raised â€Å"free† of people he considered inferior than his race. In Italy, entire small towns, saw their population fall by half in the decade between 19th century to the 20th century. Of these population, almost a third had as destiny the dreamy North America, specially New York, which had a great need of menpower. Citation Dr. Gerry Krase a Brooklyn College professor afirms that the â€Å"culture of this particular Italian population attempted to recreate their Italian villages from back home and tried to reflect their exaggerated sense of defense against any other culture or ethnicity†. In 1980’s the italian population reached its higher number of residents in New York. Bensonhurst, was one of the main neighborhoods that they were found. Analysing the history a few years back, in 1968, civil rights legislation made segregation illegal, but it remained through a series of individual actions, institutional practices and government policies. The separation of housing areas developed by ethinicities remained stable for while, but co nsenquently saw a shift in which African Americans started to ihabit and visit such as Bensonhurst. In the United States, it was said that the Italians were not black, but they were not white either. They suffered racism, but still felt that they were superior to African Americans. During the 1990’s, when the movie was filmed, although clear acts of discrimination were publicly prohibited by law, discrimination based on skin color continued to happen. .Differences and contrasts between groups was a very important feature in the evolution of life in group. Social relations between two groups could be identified such as two social groups: we and others. The others are not just the others, they are usually also the enemy. Others are not civilized, others do not have our customs, others are violent, others are bad, others do not follow our gods (who are the only true ones), others have strange behaviors that are not ours, others bring us diseases, others eat our food, others kill us, others deserve to be fought. In short, hell is the others. Groups compete with each other. Groups of animals of the same species compete for the same resource, same foods, same type of territory that they prefer and same ideal environmental conditions. This idea could be compared to humans’ evolution. But also, group life has evolved bringing many benefits to the success of an individual and his peers, but also bringing intergroup competition. Discrimination of â€Å"others† results in union and cooperation of members of the â€Å"we†. Cooperate with we to beat others. This explanation can be used when Vinny, the italian character in the movie which is being analyzed, follows Paulie along with other italian friends, trying to make him feel bad about going out with an African American girl. He says â€Å"are you going out with that â€Å"f† nigger? You are a â€Å"f† disgrace†. Vinny and the friends ended up beating him for his intention of seeing Orin. The analogy above can be seen in real life when in the summer of 1989 (two years before the film was released), Yusef K Hawkins, a black teenager, went shopping for a car in Bensonhurst, which was stated above was predonmily italian at the time but seeing more and more other ethinicities around. A group of italian teens, attacked him and eventually shot him. In reality the group thought he was there to date one of the girls pertaining to the neighborhood. The defense not just of the neighborhood against non-whites, but also the defense of the body of the woman that belonged to them. Again it is possible to see the â€Å"we† against â€Å"others†. It is a mechanism of defense against the mix of their community. One group dominates the other institutionalizing a prejudice. Vinny, the italian teens involded in Yussaf’s murder and the many italians in Ben that demonstrated racism against african americans, were fighting ideals that were passed by older generations. The ideals that they were better than blacks and that in their new territory ( the neighborhood in New York city), they needed to show they were stronger and better in order to maitain that little space for them. That territory was hard for them to conquer and they should not allow any outsiders.
